  General Information:

  Target Audience

  • Senior Secondary Music students. Yr 10-12

  • Undergraduate music students needing to make up prerequisite material.

  • It is intended for use by online students, or as a supplementary resource for school music classes.

  Purpose

  • To provide an environment that enables students to explore the sounds of SATB Harmony

  • To facilitate learning by prompting students to experiment with harmonies and to develop their harmonic imaginations.

  • To guide students in the creative process of writing Harmonic progressions using the sounds of harmony found in their harmonic imagination.

  Rationale

  • Harmony is sound

  • Music literacy has many parallels with language literacy

  • The learning process should therefore begin with a solid experience of the sounds of Harmony, and the development of the musical imagination, rather than the mere following of theoretical rules and formulae.

  • Like artistic expressions of language, the art of harmony writing has historical and cultural contexts which influence the various styles of writing. Each style has its own grammatical structures which govern our understanding, appreciation and expectations as we interpret expressions in that style.

  Research

  • In the design of this online course, a significant amount of research was done into the current literature relating to music education, music and language, language learning, and effective online learning.
